Tommy Hindman Talks About Healthy Eating

August 01, 2016
Hi folks, Tommy Hindman here talking about eating healthy. As an attorney, I need a lot of energy so I try to eat helathy as often as I can. One of the things you can do to live a healthier lifestyle with little to no effort is to go meat less a couple of days a week. Now, before you go turning up your nose at the thought of ditching a hamburger for tofu, I'm going to give you a few statistics and a recipe. Here are a few good reasons to cut out meat from a few meals a week if not altogether:

1. The food looks better.
The world of vegetarian food is full of flavor, color, texture and variety. Studies have shown that the more texture and color there are in our food, the less we eat, the more satisfied we feel, and the better we feel about our food. So, if you're trying to shed a few pounds going veg for a couple of meals will help. Which brings us to the next reason:

2. Losing weight
Going vegetarian completely or at least for a few meals a week will help you lose weight and keep the pounds off. Studies have shown that, on average, Americans are 32% likely to be obese, the percentage for American vegetarians is only 4%.

3. Reduced risk of heart disease.
It's no secret that heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S. A plant based diet has shown to greatly reduce the risk of heart disease and increase quality of life. As a matter of fact, a recent study showed that people who cut their meat consumption in half or go completely vegetarian have a 24% less risk of heart disease thatn meat eaters.

4. Longer life.
Would you like to live longer? Who wouldn't? How about six years longer? A study done over a twelve year period published in The British Medical Journal shoed that on average, vegetarians lived six years longer than their meat eating counterparts.

So-are you ready to go meat less for a couple of meals? Here's a recipe to get you started. It has tofu, but even the most die hard meat eater will go for this one:

Marinated Tofu Steaks Recipe:

1 Block of extra firm tofu
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
hot sauce to taste
1tsp garlic powder
1tsp ground black pepper
Preheat the oven to 400
While the oven is preheating, slice the block of tofu lengthwise into four even sized “steaks”
Mix the rest of the ingredients in a Pyrex oven safe dish that will hold all of the steaks.
Lay the steaks in the dish and allow to marinate 15 minutes on each side.
Once the steaks have marinated, place the steaks on an oiled baking rack on a baking sheet and bake for 1 hour. Remove the steaks from the oven and let cool.
Once cool wrap the steaks in cling wrap and freeze overnight.
Freezing gives the steaks a meaty texture.
Cut into cubes and serve over pasta, rice, baked potatoes with your favorite sauce or toppings.
Hope you enjoyed this! I’ll be back with more health eating tips soon.
